Texting while driving is already illegal, but if some lawmakers have their way, it will cost you a whole lot more than a traffic ticket.

Legislation to impose stiffer penalties for distracted driving is making its way through the state legislature. The proposals would raise the insurance rates of people ticketed for distracted driving offenses.

The bill, which just came out of the Transportation Committee ,would add points against your drivers license if you’re pulled over for texting and driving.

“It’s one thing to get a fine of $75, $100 dollars,” said state Rep. Tony Guerrera, chairman of the Transportation Committee. “It’s another thing to get a fine but now your insurance company finds out and now mabye points might be attached to your license.”
