Andrew Schwapp, Asaph Schwapp’s brother, and Nick Macca, Schwapp’s best friend, join Stan Simpson to pay tribute to Schwapp, one of Connecticut’s rising stars who lost his life to cancer at age 26.

Here’s Paul Doyle’s story in the Hartford Courant this week from Schwapp’s funeral. Read more at courant.com.

WINDSOR — The line inside the Carmon Funeral Home was forming well before the 9 a.m. start of Asaph Schwapp’s viewing Tuesday morning and it was spilling outside less than 90 minutes later.

They came from the many parts of Schwapp’s life to pay their respects — friends from Hartford and Weaver High School, coaches who knew him as a player or opponent, teammates from various levels of football and mentors from the community.

About 1,000 people filed into the building to honor Schwapp, the Hartford native and Notre Dame graduate. Schwapp, 26, died last week after battling non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

During a service at the Carmon chapel, Alvin Schwapp spoke about his younger brother’s leadership skills and engaging personality. Alvin, a retired Bloomfield police officer and a member of the Army Reserve, said he was in awe of his brother’s resilience as he spent a year fighting cancer.
