State parks and beaches, both public and private, have had this holiday weekend circled on the calendar ever since Hurricane Sandy.

But the first two days of Memorial Day weekend were weather-related busts, so that leaves today as the unofficial start of summer, given the forecast of sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 70s.

All 107 public parks and beaches will be open, although many are still cleaning up from Sandy. At Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, brush and debris from Sandy has been pushed aside to make room for campers, but still needs to be removed. At Silver Sands State Park in Milford, the beach will be open, but parts of the boardwalk are still officially closed, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s website.
