Ryan Riddle, a veteran who served in Iraq, was shot in the leg and received shrapnel injuries. He filed for disability and was initially denied by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. His claim was initially denied, but three years later he received disability.

Riddle says the country should do more for its veterans. This Memorial Day, Riddle says people should remember the selfless service soldiers perform so Americans can remain free.

Christopher Coutu, an 18-year Army National Guard veteran, founded AmericanWarrior, which reaches out to Connecticut schools and recruits students to volunteer to support veterans. The group is now focused on flying World War II veterans to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Coutu says veterans are members and part of the community. If you see a veteran from a past war, it means the world to say thank you, he said.
