If you see a bald eagle nest, it’s usually at a distance. But in Hamden, a pair of adult eagles picked a spot right along busy State Street. And if that wasn’t noisy enough, the nest is also next to the train tracks.

Birdwatchers, or “birders” as they’re commonly called, have been flocking to a parking lot across the street to catch a glimpse of the chick in the nest. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection estimated that the chick is about two months old.

Why the adult bald eagles picked the spot to raise a family has birders baffled, but wildlife experts believe it was a trade-off for prime hunting grounds. The nest is positioned close to marshes along the Quinnipiac River.

“A lot of water, a lot of fish, they’re happy, and they’re raising their baby,” birder Nancy Papa said.

The train tracks are off limits to the public, so spectators won’t be able to get too close to the birds.
