Thousands are expected to pack Bushnell Park on Saturday for the annual Race for the Cure. The 5K race, and other events, raise money for Komen Connecticut, which provides free screening services and support to those who are diagnosed with breast cancer. Funds also support cancer research, with 75 percent of the money raised staying in the state.

This year, Julie Armstrong of Avon has been featured in the Race for the Cure marketing campaign. Armstrong, a breast cancer survivor, has quality health insurance and was able to receive the regular treatment she needed, but she got involved with Komen because she knows many women don’t have the same privilege.

“There are so many women who cannot afford the most basic health care and testing,” Armstrong says. “I support Komen Connecticut for the work they are doing across the state and the services they provide to underserved women.”
