The Weaver High School boys baseball team has been around the bases a few times, but they haven’t exactly realized diamond dreams yet. The boys baseball team hasn’t won a game since 2010.

The Weaver Beavers are 0-70 in the last four seasons and this streak is getting them noticed. Senator Chris Murphy heard about the team’s troubles and Tuesday he hit the field to help out. The Senator plays catcher for the Democrats baseball team in Washington D.C.

On Tuesday, Murphy spent part of the afternoon hitting and catching with the kids and offered them some encouraging words.

“These guys aren’t wining but they’re coming out here and giving it their all and if I’ve learned anything in my short time in politics – it’s that character is everything,” Murphy said.

The junior senator took batting practice and did some infield work with the Weaver squad, who were happy to share their field.

“It’s an honor to have a U.S. Senator here and watch us play out of all teams, we’re not one of the best teams but to have him come and see us play, it’s an honor,” said junior shortstop Daniel Livant.

There is some good news for the Weaver team: they lost just one senior this year. Coach Jamie Verab expects 12 players to return to the squad next year.
