HARTFORD – A woman was injured in a shooting at the West Indian Social Club Monday night, police said.

Police received a report of the shooting shortly before 11 p.m. When officers arrived, a large crowd was dispersing, and people were leaving without directing them to the victim or suspect, Sgt. William Mooney said.

Officers found a woman who was struck by bullet fragments. The woman told them she had been standing in the front entrance when she felt something brush by her; she then saw that shrapnel was protruding from her ankle, Mooney said.

The woman went to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in a private vehicle for treatment, he said.

Police found a 9-mm casing at the scene.

The suspect is described as 5 feet 6 and 170-200 pounds. He was wearing a white shirt, white hat and white shorts. He had a black, semi-automatic handgun, police said.

The investigation continues.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Crime Stoppers tip line, 860-722-8477 (TIPS).
