A ribbon cutting ceremony was held today in Ansonia for a playground dedicated to six-year-old Catherine Hubbard.

The playground was built at John Pendergast Elementary School on Finney Road.

The New Jersey State Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association (NJSFMBA) is behind the “Sandy Ground Project.”

“As firefighters, it’s cathartic for us. When children get injured or, God forbid, killed, it’s a failure of the system, and we take it very personally. This is our way of giving something back. The playground is a symbol of recovery, of hope, and to honor a child this way, we think it’s the most perfect way,” said Bill Lavin, president of NJSFMBA.

They playground will serve a dual purpose. In addition to honoring the Newtown victims, the playgrounds are being built in areas of Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey that were affected by Hurricane Sandy.
