Tropical Storm Andrea, off the west coast of Florida this morning, will move up the I-95 corridor, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds Friday into Friday night. The good news is that the storm will continue to move out of our region on Saturday, leaving the possibility for some sunshine to return during the afternoon hours. The bad news is that there is potential for flooding. Upwards of 2”-4” inches of rain could come down in a relatively short period of time once the rain starts tomorrow afternoon. It’s important to take note that poor drainage areas, basements and urban centers are the most vulnerable areas for localized flooding.
The rain will taper off early Saturday morning, as the storm will depart the region during the morning hours. Some sun will peak through broken clouds, allowing for temperatures to rebound well in the 70s with moderately humid conditions. There will be the chance for a pop-up shower Saturday afternoon, as the atmosphere becomes more unstable due to the daytime heating and elevated levels of humidity.
Sunday will be the pick of the weekend, as skies will be partly to mostly sunny and temperatures will reach the upper 70s to low 80s.
More rain is in the forecast for late Monday into Tuesday, due to an upper level trough that will swing out of the Great Lakes, pivot through New England, and deliver an additional half inch to an inch of rain. Temperatures will average near or below normal, as highs will stay in the 70s and lows will be in the 50s and 60s.
This wet weather pattern will continue through the middle of June. The overall jet stream shows a trough in the east, which means unsettled wet weather and cooler than normal temperatures, while the west will continue to experience warmer than normal temperatures and drier weather.
