Tropical Storm Andrea, located across South Carolina this morning, continues to track north along the I-95 corridor with heavy rain today. This storm will ride up the coast and track to Cape Cod by tomorrow morning, with a couple of bands of heavy flooding rains that will accumulate, on average, 2”-4”. A Flood Watch is in effect until noon tomorrow, as the heaviest rain will fall across the area late today and overnight. There is potential for flooding in poor drainage areas, including: local roads and basements. Some computer models are showing localized amounts of 4”-5” with and 1.5” -2” falling in only six short hours across western areas overnight. If that verifies, major flash flooding is highly likely. It will depend on the exact track of the storm. As of this morning, the latest forecast track brings the remnants of Tropical Storm Andrea off the New Jersey coast by tonight and then onto Cape Cod by tomorrow morning. This track is conducive for heavy rains to the left of the storm, which is exactly where Connecticut is located.
Wind will not be a factor as the strongest winds are to the right of the storm. The good news is that the storm will continue to move out of our region on Saturday, leaving the possibility for some sunshine to return during the afternoon hours. The rain will taper off early Saturday morning as the storm departs the region, allowing for some sun to peak through those broken clouds.
High temperatures will rebound well into the 70s with moderate levels of humidity. There will be the chance for a pop-up shower Saturday afternoon or in the evening, as the atmosphere becomes more unstable due to the daytime heating and elevated levels of humidity.
Sunday will be the pick of the weekend, as the skies will become partly to mostly sunny; temperatures will warmup into the 80s.
Another wet weather system will deliver more rain late Monday into Tuesday due to an upper level trough that will swing out of the Great Lakes, pivot through New England, and deliver an additional one half to an inch of rain. Temperatures will average near or below normal, as highs will stay in the 70s, and lows in the 50s and 60s.
This wet weather pattern will continue through the middle of June as the overall jet stream shows a trough in the east, which means unsettled wet weather and cooler than normal temperatures, while the west will continue to experience warmer than normal temperatures and drier weather.
