Woman Charged With Domestic Homicide

BRIDGEPORT – A woman who police say intentionally drove into the father of her child, crushing him against a cinderblock wall, has been charged with murder.

Cherelle Baldwin, 21, of 93-95 Ash St., was arrested Monday, according to a press release from William Kaempffer, public safety spokesman. Police are calling it a domestic homicide.

After a three-week investigation, police learned that Baldwin intentionally accelerated her red Pontiac and pinned Jeffrey Brown on May 18, the release states.

About 8:40 a.m. that morning, police and firefighters responded to Ash Street and found Brown between the Pontiac and a wall. Medics were unable to revive him.

Baldwin was found just outside the Pontiac with a leg injury, police said. She gave several accounts of what happened, but they could not be substantiated by physical evidence at the scene, the release states.

Police reconstructed the scene and learned that the car traveled about 100 feet, apparently accelerating the entire time, before striking Brown. There was no sign she attempted to brake, police said.

The investigation showed that Baldwin’s leg injury most likely happened during the car’s impact with the wall, while her foot was on the accelerator.

“Detective Heitor Teixeira interviewed a large number of people to get a clear understanding of what happened, and work by the Crime Scene Unit and accident investigators was key to getting to the truth,” said Police Chief Joseph Gaudett Jr. in the written statement. “It was thorough and labor intensive police work.”

The chief also thanked Trumbull police for helping with the investigation; a Trumbull accident reconstructionist assisted.

Bridgeport detectives Edwin Perez and Todd Hoben also worked on the case, the release states.

Baldwin remained in custody with bail set at $1 million Monday afternoon, Kaempffer said.
