CROMWELL – The sun was out for most of the day at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell and “Operation Shower” was in full swing. The Travelers Championship and sponsors give back to military families through a program called Operation Shower.

Over the past three years, military moms and moms-to-be have been presented with a “shower in a box,” which includes everything from diaper bags and stuffed animals to baby clothes. On Tuesday, 40 moms, mostly from the Groton Sub Base, were treated to all the newborn necessities just steps away from the 10th tee.

“This is the ultimate outpouring of support,” said Betsey Houston, whose husband works aboard the Naval Sub USS New Hampshire. Houston is due with her first child, a boy, on Friday. “It makes you realize that so many people appreciate what military families go through,” Houston added.

Operation shower works in conjunction with the military outreach program “Birdies For The Brave.” The organization has served about 1,400 military moms since it launched in 2007.
