MONTVILLE – A state police pursuit of a stolen car that began along I-95 ended near routes 161 and 85 in Montville with the driver in custody and an innocent motorist in a car submerged in a pond, said Capt. Tom Garbedian, a state police spokesman.

The driver of the stolen car was driving north on Route 161 when he tried to make an aggressive turn at a high speed and struck a propane truck broadside, state police said. The truck then flipped and went into a pond.

Two state troopers responding to the scene jumped into the water, and with the help of a civilian were able to get the truck driver out, state police said. He was airlifted to Hartford Hospital.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, a Chevy pick-up truck, was arrested on scene. Police have not yet released his name or the charges against him.

The pursuit ended with the crash at about 2:25 p.m. Tuesday.

Speeds during the pursuit reached 90 and 100 mph.
