A new training program in collaboration with the state Department of Labor is helping returning veterans get jobs in local police and fire departments.
The Vets to Cops & Firefighters Program was developed to assist local towns and cities identify and recruit qualified applicants, especially since many returning veterans have transferable skills for these careers.
The unemployment rate for veterans aged 18 to 24 is 18 percent, and the overall unemployment rate of veterans is 8 percent. So far, about 20 veterans have taken part in the workshops and are in the hiring stages with various police and fire departments throughout the state.
