U.S. Rep. Joseph Courtney was in Connecticut on Monday to try to muster the momentum that last summer forced a one-year extension of the 3.4 percent rate on federally subsidized Stafford student loans.

Like last year, the rate will jump to 6.8 percent on July 1 unless Congress acts. The rate has been 3.4 percent since 2007.

Now the looming deadline has students in Connecticut pushing back. Students at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain will rally against the student loan interest rate hikes today. Like students around the country, protesters at CCSU said they plan to rally until Congress takes action.

Lawmakers in Washington D.C. have a few days to extend the current interest rate on certain student loans. Some students in Connecticut have said that they can’t afford the current rate.
