Sikorsky, a division of Hartford-based United Technologies Corp., is laying off about 200 employees across operations in nine states, with most of the cuts in Connecticut, a company spokesman said Thursday.

The company, based in Stratford, declined to offer a breakdown of the layoffs.

“Today we took the very difficult but necessary step of implementing a workforce reduction throughout the enterprise to lower costs in line with business requirements and resources,” said spokesman Paul Jackson in a written statement. “Sikorsky continues to look to a promising future, but today we face difficult challenges.”

The cuts come as the United States trims its military budget, and cost pressures increase, he said. “And many customers are delaying purchase decisions amid the economic uncertainty.”

Most of the cuts are salaried employees with no layoffs being union positions. Sikorsky employs about 8,600 in the state.
