SOUTH WINDSOR – A 19-year-old who police say was driving a sports utility vehicle that crashed, killing two occupants, has been charged with manslaughter, police said Thursday.

Sara Ballard of Sandstone Drive in South Windsor was charged with two counts each of second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, police said. She also was charged with reckless driving.

She was released from custody on a promise to appear in Superior Court in Manchester on July 11. Police say Ballard was speeding — driving more than 80 mph — when the SUV left Abbe Road and crashed May 25.

Brooke Wormstedt, a 15-year-old sophomore at East Windsor High School, and Matthew Masse, an 18-year-old senior from Vernon, died in the crash.
