Saturday was day three of a heat wave that hit parts of Connecticut.

Some people spent the day trying to beat the heat while others chose to run in it.

In Enfield, the town held its annual Fourth of July Town Celebration. The festivities included at 5K run.

“It’s always hot for this race, and I think runners know that,” said Race Director Kierstan Pestana. “In the past we’ve only had one water station at the course, but we’ve added an extra one just to make sure our runners are OK.”

Runners described the weather as brutal, but they came prepared.

“You just run, get over it and then cool off afterward. You just get used to it,” said Roger Davis.

“As much hydration as possible,” said Laura Bachiochi. “It’s really important to be hydrated in weather like this.”

One-hundred-eighty-one runners participated in the race and only one runner needed some assistance related to the heat.

Out in Middletown the city opened fire hydrant sprinklers to help people cool off across town.

“I think it’s pretty good. It helps a lot,” said Jaleida Freeman.

She brought her two kids out to a park so they wouldn’t stay locked up indoors.

“I wanted to give the kids a little playtime when it cooled down around 5 p.m., so I brought them out because that’s when it’s not as hot as it is in the afternoon,” said Freeman.

Hartford Hospital officials report they did receive some patients for heat related illnesses, though it was nothing severe and no more than they would usually get for weather like this.

In Bridgeport, the city opened the Greater Bridgeport Transmit Bus Terminal at 710 Water Street to allow residents to cool off between noon and 6 p.m. That will stay open through the weekend.

The City of Middletown will also be opening fire hydrant sprinklers at designated times and locations. The sprinklers are expected to be opened Saturday and Sunday and will be at the following locations:

  • The Highlands Crescent Drive bus stop from noon – 4 p.m.
  • Maplewood Terrace from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Summer Hill Road and Woodbury Circle from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.
  • MacDonough School from noon – 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Santangelo Circle from noon – 3 p.m.
