Some young summer campers have been working up a sweat in this extreme heat on a pretty cool project.

Middle school and high school students have spent all week along the Thames River in Gales Ferry building a 17 foot rowboat, called a Dory.

Boat building instructor, Russell Smith, said it usually takes about 40 hours to build that type of boat, but production “cooled” in the soaring temperatures.

Extra and necessary water breaks slowed the work pace.

“It’s been really hot, but it’s worth it, I mean I want to build a boat, it looks pretty cool,” Xavier Whitmore, 13, said.

The kids expected to launch their creation in the water Saturday.
