The planning and zoning commission in West Haven approved an application by Advanced Grow Labs for a medical marijuana grow site on Frontage Road. The company plans to apply for a license to grow medical marijuana with the state this fall.

While the law to approve marijuana for medicinal purposes was passed in 2012, the state is still working out the details of how the drug will be regulated. The law requites the state to allow at least three but no more than 10 dispensaries across the state.

In addition to West Haven, plans for grow sites and dispensaries in Middletown, New Britain, Bridgeport, Waterbury and Watertown have also been discussed.

The state expects to have regulations complete by August and begin issuing licenses early next year, with dispensaries up and running six months later.

More than 700 people in Connecticut are already certified to use medical marijuana. Conditions that the drug is used to treat include post traumatic stress disorder, spinal cord damage, cancer and multiple sclerosis.
