Businesses in New Haven have different views on the construction of the new Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge.

Cody’s Diner, on Water Street, which runs beneath the bridge, is open 24 hours a day. The fact that Water Street will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., from July 29 through Aug. 31, due to bridge construction, will have an impact on Cody’s.

Meanwhile, just one block north of Water Street is New Haven’s Little Italy, Wooster Street. And businesses have seen no negative impact on their bottom line since construction commenced.

Loretta Abate, Owner of Abate Restaurant, noted that, especially when people are traveling to or from Sumner destinations, Wooster Street is often a rest stop for travelers, especially given the increased traffic from construction.

But, Wooster Street is tucked in between the trouble areas of Water Street and Chapel Street.

Mike Daniele, the owner of the Lincoln Flower Shop, on Chapel Street, says business is anything but fragrant.

“The traffic is so bottled up, people don’t even want to come here. I have customers that have called me and asked me can I come to their house, because they had a family member pass away,” said a frustrated Daniele.
