Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra’s former Chief of Staff, who was in the news several months ago for running up a New Year’s Eve tab on a city credit card, was in court today answering two misdemeanor charges stemming from unauthorized use of a city vehicle for weeks after he resigned.

A judge granted Jared Kupiec, 30, accelerated rehabilitation, which includes one year of probation, restitution of at least $2,662 to the City of Hartford and 100 hours of community service.

Kupiec resigned June 21. But, he did not turn in the keys to his city issued 2010 Ford Explorer the day he left. Remarkably, nobody from the city noticed for two and a half weeks.

One July 8, while investigating several vandalized vehicles along Capitol Avenue, Hartford Police ran the plates and discovered one was registered to the City of Hartford. It turned out to be the city vehicle that had been assigned to Jared Kupiec.

When Kupiec was asked by police why the car was parked in front of his apartment, instead of it’s assigned spot beneath the Hartford Public Library, he lied to police and told them he had no idea. Later, he came clean
