At Meriden Markham Airport, a couple of hundred yards, both north and south of the airport’s one runway, there are some densely populated neighborhoods. Given what happened in East Haven, it’s understandable that nerves in neighborhoods near smaller airports are a bit frayed.

“I sit right in my living room and, it appears, that when they come in, they’re gonna go right through a window, says Robin Hollman, whose family has lived in a home two blocks north of Meriden Markham Airport for 18 years

In May, a homemade private plane flipped over while landing at the airport, which sees as many as 50 takeoffs and landings each day. The pilot, the lone person aboard, suffered only minor injuries.

Local pilots say, regardless of occasional accidents at their local airports, they are just as particular with their pre and in-flight checks.

“It’s unfortunate that you have to learn that way. But it seems like, that’s the way humans learn. They learn from mistakes of others if they’re smart. He who does not remember the past is going to revisit it,” says David Pepe, a 20 year Meriden pilot, who built his own plane.

The monthly Meriden Aviation Commission meeting will be held at Meriden Markham Airport tomorrow night at 6:30. It is open to the public.
