Below is Korky Vann’s story about back to school shopping and Connecticut’s tax-free week. Read more at courant.com.

Connecticut began its annual tax-free week Sunday, which means that for the next seven days shoppers will save the 6.35 percent sales tax on most clothing and shoe purchases priced under $300.

That, along with an explosion of corresponding sales at national chains and local stores, may be enough incentive to get cash-strapped parents to open their wallets.

Despite the discounts and deals, research by the National Retail Federation shows that total back-to-school spending for families with school-age children is expected to be down to $634.78 this year, from $688.62 in 2012. Eighty percent of parents with school-age children say economic conditions will affect their spending and they’ll be comparison shopping online and in stores to find the best deals, according to NRF’s 2013 Back-to-School Survey.
