SHELTON — A Cumberland Farms worker remains in critical condition after falling while trying to stop an SUV from driving away with stolen David Hasselhoff signs, police said.

The 36-year-old man landed on his head in the store parking lot while trying to get two signs back as the alleged thieves drove away, they said. He is at Bridgeport Hospital.

Police said Wednesday that a 19-year-old man has admitted involvement and is cooperating with the investigation. No one had been arrested as of 7:45 a.m.

The incident happened about 1:15 a.m. at the Cumberland Farms, 819 River Road.

According to police, a man got out of a sports utility vehicle and cut the two large signs off a light pole. The signs, which advertise iced coffee, have pictures of the actor and singer and have been targeted by prankster-thieves around the state and beyond.

The man put the signs in the back of the SUV, after which the employee approached and tried to get them back.

The vehicle sped away and the worker was dragged, police said. He then spun around and flipped backwards, landing on his head.

The SUV, which was occupied by a male driver, a female front-seat passenger and a male backseat passenger, was last seen on River Road heading toward Stratford, police said.

Anyone else with information about the incident is asked to call the detective bureau at 203-924-1544.
