Access Health CT, the state’s official health insurance marketplace, will be enrolling

thousands of uninsured or underinsured Connecticut residents beginning on October 1. Their goal: reducing Connecticut’s 344,000 uninsured residents by about one third during the first year of the Affordable Healthcare Act.

The organization feels consistent, coordinated outreach will be key to the successful implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). To that end, Access Health CT has enlisted some 300 community-based organizations to bring the health coverage marketplace to the people in their cities and towns.

The program will engage the community in ways that are sensitive to different languages and cultures when educating and enrolling consumers in one of four health plans available.

Each individual taking part in the community outreach must pass an extensive background check, sign Privacy, Security and Conflict of Interest statements and complete 34-40 hours of training, pass a certification test and carry photo ID badges.

Access Health CT is also going to open retail stories, in several cities, including New Britain and New Haven, to extend to individuals the opportunity to interact with Access Health CT staffers and insurance brokers, who will educate and enroll.

Open enrollment begins October 1 and Connecticut residents, age 18-65, must have insurance by March 15 of next year to be in compliance with the Affordable Care Act.
