Who would have thought there would come a day where a school system would actually encourage students to use their mobile devices during school. That’s exactly what Meriden schools are doing with their BYOD initiative. That’s bring your own device.

“It allows all kids and all kinds of learners to be able to communicate with each other and with the teacher, especially kids who are typically shy or nervous about raising their hands and talking aloud in class,” said Dan Corsetti, a teacher at Platt High School.

Corsetti estimates at least half of his class work incorporates use of his students’ personal electronic devices. And, if a student does not have one, the schools have them covered.

“We’ve added over 600 at our high schools. 500 more are on the way. We’re also encouraging students to share with one another, said Mark Benigni, Superintendent of Schools.

And, yes, kids admit, school has become cool.

“Of course, you always want to be with your own device, your cell phone and stuff like that. So, why not do your work and keep notes on it,” noted Issac Cartagena, a Platt High School junior.

Jacqualyn Townsend, another Platt High School junior, says she took advanced placement U.S. history in large part because of the prospect of using an iPad.
