LEDYARD — Police have charged a local man with possession of an illegal reptile after determining it was his 4-foot-long Nile Monitor Lizard that was helping itself to the residents of a chicken coop on Aug. 25.

Anthony String, 36, of Spicer Hill Road, was issued a ticket and is scheduled to appear Sept. 25 in Superior Court in New London.

Police shot and killed the lizard after responding to a 911 call from a Shewville Road resident reporting what she thought was an alligator in her chicken coop. Police found the lizard attacking the chickens and shot it to prevent it from killing any more chickens.

The lizard had been sighted several times in eastern Ledyard prior to its foray into the chicken coop.
