Automakers say new sophisticated systems can actually warn you before a crash happens. The idea sounds almost too good to be true, but new research shows they really could keep you and your family safer.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says high tech systems in new cars are keeping drivers safer. It is called collision avoidance technology, and the institute tested several to determine if they are effective and worth the money. The institute found they reduce crashes with other vehicles by about seven percent, and that is just the work of the warning system. The automatic breaking system doubles the effectiveness, according to the institute.

Without auto brakes, one test showed damage exceeding $28,000. With auto brakes, less than $6,000.

So, crash avoidance technology could cost you hundreds, or even a few thousands of dollars right now, but it could save you even more. The technology is available in about 5 to 10 percent of new cars on the lots right now.
