A Southbury woman is heartbroken after animal control took her pets.  The problem was she had dozens of dogs in her house.

Nancy Boeckel said animal control took 31 dogs from her property Thursday.

Southbury’s Animal Control Officer did not return calls for comment.

Boeckel claimed she was running an animal sanctuary from her home, taking in sick and dying dogs, as well as dogs about to be euthanized.

She said she would then adopt the dogs out.  “I don’t know how they are, I don’t know where they are, I know they’re not getting their medicine, no one’s asked me who gets what,” Boeckel said with tears in her eyes.

The Department Of Agriculture’s animal control division said Boeckel was using her home as an animal shelter and it therefore needed to be registered as a not-for-profit.

Boeckel admitted she gets most of her dogs from New York.  State Animal Control said that means she must have an importer’s license, which the agency said she does not have.
