The state is set to approve the first round of funding for construction of a new Sandy Hook Elementary School building on Friday.

Lawmakers have set aside $50 million total for a new elementary school in Newtown. On Friday, the state bond commission will  vote on the first allocation towards construction, $3.7 million.

After the tragedy, the community is moving forward with plans for a school that for the 450 kindergarten through fourth grade students that were impacted by the violence last December.

Gov. Malloy said the state is pledging its support and is prepared to approve funding for the school. In July, the commission approved allocating $750 thousand for the design of the building. The funding is another way the state is continuing its unwavering support for the Sandy Hook community.

The new school will replace the existing Sandy Hook Elementary, which will be demolished.

Sandy Hook students will continue to attend Chalk Hill School in Monroe until 2016.

The bond commission meeting starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.
