FAIRFIELD — Authorities are working to keep the Bronson Road neighborhood safe after explosive devices, more than 150 guns and tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition were found at a house there.

The explosive devices have been removed and detonated, but potentially-dangerous substances remain in the house and must be removed by professionals, police and fire officials said at a press conference Wednesday morning.

Bronson Road will be closed for the rest of the day and possibly into tomorrow, they said.

A man in his 60s lives at the house, which had been the focus of local, regional, state and federal authorities since Tuesday, when a large amount of hazardous materials were found.

“A large amount of various chemicals” were found at the Bronson Road residence, Christopher Tracy, Fairfield’s acting fire chief, stated in a brief press release early Wednesday.

At least some of the chemicals appear to have been used for the homeowner’s rocketry hobby, said Dennis Schain of the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Local police and firefighters have been at the Bronson Road residence since Tuesday; also at the scene were agents from the FBI and from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and representatives of the Fairfield County Hazardous Incident Response Team, a regional haz-mat team, the Tracy said.

Representatives of the state police and the state D.E.E.P. also have been at the scene, he said. In addition, an ambulance crew from American Medical Response is on hand.
