A big piece of American history landed at Waterbury-Oxford Airport.

The vintage and completely restored WWII B17 Bomber called Aluminum Overcast is in Connecticut for public tours.

Thursday, it took up three WWII veterans who were actually B17 crew members.

It was their first flight on a B17 since they got back from the war, almost 70 years ago.

“Felt beautiful. I recommend you keep the thing tuned up to go out every couple weeks with old WWII vets,” said Ed Markey, a former B17 tail gunner.

Leonard Mangine, who was a B17 radio operator, said:  “It brought me to tears when I go out of there. I love that airplane.”

During the war, thousands of B17 Bombers were built.  Many of them got shot down.

Today, fewer than 15 B17s still exist that can actually still fly.
