EAST HARTFORD – The T.J. Weist-Tim Boyle era at UConn started with about as much excitement as the Paul Pasqualoni-Chandler Whitmer era. The Huskies didn’t score in the second half and lost 13-10 Saturday aftenoon before 37,861 at Rentschler Field.

Boyle completed 15 of 43 passes for 149 yards. He had no touchdowns and no interceptions. Boyle rushed nine times for 12 yards.

It’s the first time since 1977 UConn started 0-5. South Florida is 2-4. South Florida is 2-0 in The American, UConn 0-1.

Most of the homecoming crowd did not stick around till the end.

On UConn’s final drive, Boyle threw three near-interceptions. All were dropped by South Florida defenders. The Huskies also lost a lot of time by failing to call a timeout.

Marvin Kloss kicked a 44-yard field goal with 4:03 to put South Florida ahead 13-10.

Lyle McCombs rushed for a career high 164 yards. His previous high was 152 against Syracuse in 2011. But most of that yardage came early Saturday. He scored UConn’s only TD on a 52-yard run in the second quarter.

It was 10-10 at halftime. Chad Christen kicked a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter and Kloss kicked a 47-yard field goal in the second.
South Florida scored in a flukey way in the first quarter when Boyle was sacked by Ryne Giddins, fumbled and Aaron Lynch picked it up and ran 44 yards for a touchdown.

UConn is at Cincinnati next Saturday for a noon game. South Florida hosts Louisville Oct. 26.
