A historic textile mill in Stafford is about to become history.

The Warren Corp. mill has been weaving cashmere, camel hair and wool into some of the finest fabrics in the world for more than 150 years.

In December, production will end at the mill, putting almost a hundred people out of work.

When Loro Piana took control of operations in 1988, the mill had about 320 workers…by 2010, employment was down to about 125…and just last year, the company laid off 57 workers.

Loro Piana said stiff competition in the global marketplace forced the layoffs and ultimately forced the demise of the mill.

“It’s sad, it’s sad to see our industry leaving the country, and in particular our little town,” Joe Paradiso of Stafford said.

Warren Corp. plans to lay off 75 workers in December and a skeleton crew of 10 workers will remain until the mill fully closes in April.
