SIMSBURY — Spirit week festivities got a little out of hand Friday at Simsbury High School when the school’s seniors staged a flash mob in the school’s cafeteria.

About 300 seniors participated. One student had a portable sound system and students chanted and otherwise made a racket.

The event followed growing tension between the schools’ juniors and seniors during the week, who apparently hurled some insults via social media, Superintendent Matthew Curtis said.

The flash mob was an effort to unify the seniors, school officials said. School staff tried to end it, but students continued. The student with the sound system was told to turn it off, but refused, and walked out of the cafeteria with several classmates behind him. The group of seniors then walked through the school, made lots of noise, and disrupted classes.

About half of the students then continued out to the football stadium. They remained there a few minutes and then returned to the school.

On the way back in, there were some shouting matches between seniors and juniors.

A pep rally scheduled for Friday was cancelled as a result of the incident. School officials sent a letter to parents about the incident.
