MILFORD – A state trooper apparently interrupted a robbery at a Milford convenience store early Wednesday and fatally shot the masked robber, state police said.

The trooper and store clerk were not injured, although the trooper was taken to an area hospital to be evaluated.

The shooting occurred about 3:10 a.m. at Patriot Fuels at 719 Boston Post Road.

Detectives with the state police Eastern District Major Crime Squad are investigating the shooting and will work to determine, among other things, whether the man who was shot was the only person involved in the robbery, said Sgt. Donna Tadiello, a state police spokeswoman.

Milford police and troopers from throughout the area responded to the trooper’s initial call for assistance after the shooting. The suspect fled, but left a blood trail and was later tracked down.
