West Haven’s City Council Chairman is wanted on first degree larceny charges. Stephen Decrescenzo is accused of stealing at least $40,000 from a New Canaan Bank.

Fox Connecticut has learned that Decrescenzo is a former employee of the Chase Bank on Main Street in New Canaan. A warrant for his arrest has been active for about a week, New Canaan Police said.

“I don’t have any of the facts. You know, I need to learn what’s going on so my reaction is, you know, I really just don’t know,” West Haven Mayor John Picard said when he heard the news.

“There’s been issues with others in the past here. Friend or foe here, I’ve always been very consistent. This is America. You’re innocent until proven guilty and we always do the right thing here.”

Decrescenzo is also running for re-election.
