There is relief for some of Connecticut’s small farm owners.

The governor recently announced a new “Plant Grant Program” – plant is the acronym for Production Loss Assistance Needed Today.

The program will help farmers recoup losses from flooded fields, mostly from relentless rains during the month of June.

In Watertown, Karen Kalenauskas and her brother John are trying to bounce back from the heavy rains that made it impossible to make hay for the entire month of June, the funds from the Department of Agriculture program will help.

“We plan on using these funds to supplement our feed,” Karen Kalenauskas said. “This is a lifesaver, it will actually help us to feed the animals this winter.”

The program has allocated $4.9 million in emergency funds to farm and greenhouse owners across the state who fell victim to the weather damage. The Kalenauskas Farm will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year.
