A New Haven police officer is out of the hospital after a brutal collision with a city bus.

Officer Victor Herrera’s cruiser slammed into the side of the extended bus at the intersection of Elm Street and Temple Street.

Firefighters had to cut off Herrera’s driver-side door to pull the 19 year veteran out of the car.

New Haven police said Herrera and another police cruiser were responding to Union Station where another officer called for help.

Twenty-three passengers were on board the bus which took out a light post in the collision.

“I got knocked out for a few seconds, I didn’t know what happened,” passenger Debbie Conway said.

Passengers said the bus driver had the green light.

New Haven Police claimed both police cruisers had lights and sirens on.
