VERNON — Police over the weekend charged two men with driving drunk with children in the car.

The arrests happened in separate incidents, one on Route 30 and one on Route 83. In one incident, the child was a month old.

About 9:10 p.m Sunday, a patrol officer saw a car driving erratically on Route 30. The officer stopped the vehicle on South Street and the driver, Robert Apted, 41, of South Street, failed a field sobriety test, police said.

His 1-month-old baby was in the car, which also was unregistered, they said.

Apted was charged with driving under the influence, risk of injury to a minor and operating an unregistered motor vehicle, police said.

He posted $500 bail and is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 19.

The baby was placed with a family member.

In an earlier incident about 11:40 p.m. Friday, Kwadwo Kwakye, 26, of Sherman Avenue in the Bronx, N.Y., was arrested after police received a call from a concerned citizen about an erratic driver on Route 83, police said.

The concerned motorist followed the Toyota Highlander into Countrywood Apartments, 631 Talcottville Road, where police caught up with the driver.

Kwakye, who had a 4 and a 5 year old in the car, failed a field sobriety test, police said. He also did not have a valid license, they said.

He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, risk of injury to a minot and driving without a license.

Kwakye posted $2,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Rockville Nov. 19.

The children were placed with a family member.
