WEST HARTFORD — A school bus driver caused an accident Monday when he made an improper turn, police said Tuesday.

Jose Rivera of Capitol Avenue in Hartford, who was driving for First Student, was cited for failure to grant the right of way.

Five elementary school-aged children from Canton were transported to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center for minor complaints of head and neck injuries after the accident, which happened about 4:30 p.m. near the city line. In all, 12 students from the Canton school district were on board, police said.

According to police, the accident happened when Rivera, who was driving south on Prospect Avenue, tried to make a left turn onto Park Street in Hartford.

The bus was struck by another vehicle traveling north on Prospect Avenue, police said.
