Holly Holden, an interior designer and entertaining expert, talks about how to set the perfect table for your Thanksgiving dinner.

Here are some tips from Holden:

  • Make Thanksgiving a formal affair by using a traditional place setting.  Also, use place cards (even if it is the same group that always attends, place cards make people feel special.)
  • For a centerpiece, game birds and gourds are timeless fall harvest symbols. Silver trays can be used as a base. Centerpieces should be kept short so they don’t block the lines of sight between seated guests.
  • Consider salt and pepper dishes instead of shakers. Get creative with place card holders. Small gourds make lovely place card holders. Consider enlisting the help of children. Creating place card holders can be an enjoyable crafts project.
  • Use small accessories. Large seasonal accessories can detract from the formality of the atmosphere.
  • Garnishing a tray with small seasonal accessories will enhance the presentation.
  • No formal gathering is complete without candles. Simple white are the most traditional. Always blacken the wicks. A bobech (a glass ring at the base of the candle that prevents wax from dripping) can save your tablecloth.
