HARTFORD — A husband and wife, sought by Massachusetts state police who feared might harm their 20-year-old special-needs child, were located in Hartford on Wednesday in possession of a stolen vehicle and heroin, police said.

Massachusetts state police contacted Hartford’s fugitive task force on Wednesday morning for assistance locating Patrick and Debra Gaffey, of North Adams, Mass., and their child, police said.

The couple was described as suicidal and intent on doing harm to their child, according to police. Patrick Gaffey also was wanted as a fugitive from justice related to a breaking and entering case in North Adams.

Hartford officers located the family at approximately 2 p.m. near 10 Campfield Ave. Police said the child was unharmed, but that the van the couple was operating was listed as stolen and they had heroin in their possession.

Both will face drug charges in Hartford, police said. Patrick Gaffey was also charged with being a fugitive from justice and will face charges of breaking and entering a building with intent to commit a felony, malicious destruction of property and larceny in Massachusetts.

Their child was taken to Hartford Hospital for evaluation, police said. The Massachusetts Department of Children and Families was contacted and is arranging for care for him.
