Thanksgiving arrived late this year, so folks are scrambling to “spruce up” for the holidays.
“You’ve really got to get after it! The clock is ticking!” laughs John Dzen, owner of Dzen Tree Farm in South Windsor, a local staple for the last 40 years. But, now, this isn’t just a destination for purchasing Christmas trees.
Families can also visit with Mistletoe and Belle, two actual reindeer, known for pulling Santa’s sleigh.
“When you have kids nose to nose with the reindeer, standing at the fence, it’s the most special thing in the world,” says Dzen, noting that there are only two other locations in the state where children can see these animals — in Greenwich and Torrington.
Cutting down a tree together is a beloved tradition for many families. Christine Burke of West Hartford and her four kids embarked on a search before they found just the right Balsam Fir.
“We like one that’s not too big because our living room is kind of small. And we wanted a lot of branches to put a lot of ornaments on,” says 14-year-old Emory with a smile.
Dzen is grateful to be an important part of the holidays: “We love the Christmas season, and we have our heart in it, and we do all we can to make it as special as possible for all the families that come out and share their day here.”
