STORRS— A former Olympic swimmer and University of Connecticut student who allegedly made more than $12,000 in online purchases with someone else’s credit cards was charged Wednesday with identity theft, according to university police.
Diguan Denzel Pigot, 19, turned himself in after learning there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest, UConn police said. Pigot is currently a resident of Miami, Florida.
Pigot, who swam the 100 meter breaststroke for Suriname in the 2012 Olympics in London, is accused of stealing seven credit and debit accounts from a single victim and using those accounts to make 167 Internet transactions totaling $12,631.
Pigot also allegedly attempted to make another 88 transactions, totaling an additional $26,631, according to UConn police.
In order to make these transactions, Pigot created several user accounts using the victim’s name and address for billing purposes, university police said.
Pigot was charged with 57 counts each of illegal use of a credit card and receiving goods or services obtained illegally. He was also charged with criminal impersonation, identity theft, attempted identity theft, second-degree larceny, attempted first-degree larceny and 60 counts of attempted illegal use of a credit card.
Pigot was scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday.
