Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is expected to speak at the capitol Monday on what has become a controversial issue: raising the minimum wage.

Starting Jan. 1, Connecticut’s minimum wage will increase from $8.25 to $8.70, a 45-cent jump. Then next year, the minimum wage will increase another 30 cents to $9 an hour.

Connecticut is just one of 13 states that has approved a boost for minimum wage earners. State Rep. Peter Tercyak, a Democrat who introduced the bill to raise the minimum wage, says about 10 percent of all workers in the state make minimum wage and that the additional money they earn will be spent and boost the economy.

But many Republicans argue that raising the minimum wage will hurt the economy by causing job losses. The critics say if businesses are forced to pay hire wages they will decide to lay off workers or hire fewer workers.

Connecticut’s minimum wage is already $1 an hour more than the federal minimum wage of $7.25.
