BERLIN — A few hundred customers lack running water after a water main break in the Kensington section of town early Monday.

The leak happened shortly before 2 a.m. in the area of Chamberlain Highway and Norton Road. Traffic on Chamberlain Highway, or Route 71, was reduced from two lanes to one.

Crews were working to find the source of the leak and stop it, Dave Potanka, a water district worker, said at 9:15 a.m.

They hope to be able to fix the leak by this afternoon, he said.

The broken pipe is about 12 inches wide, said Public Works Director Art Simonian. The changing temperatures could have caused the soil near the pipe to shift, triggering the break, he said.
