HAMDEN — A man believed to have shot a women in Wallingford was found dead Sunday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a local residence.
Police believe the man, whose name is being withheld pending family notification, went to the home of Leanne Burger-Mestel, at 43 Heritage Woods, Wallingford around 1:30 a.m.
Police said they believe the man then rang the doorbell and shot Burger-Mestel when she answered the door. Police added the man shot at another person in the living room of the home but missed.
Burger-Mestel, 54, was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital where she underwent surgery, police said. She is in stable condition. Police said the man and Burger-Mestel had a relationship.
Wallingford police tracked the man to a home on First Street in Hamden, police said. Hamden and Wallingford Police Departments set up a perimeter and attempted to contact the man.
While outside, police said they heard what was believed to be a gunshot come from the home. The man was found dead inside.
